Sonusoft - app for calculating sound insulation in timber buildings
We have, together with Sonusoft, developed a completely new digital product that lets you calculate the sound-insulating properties of various wall and floor constructions - in real time.
The application, called Acoulatis, is primarily aimed at a professional audience such as acousticians, architects, structural engineers and other professionals who need to know how to design building elements with good sound-insulating properties. But the application itself is designed to have a very low barrier to entry, so in practice anyone could log in and start building walls and floors to see how well they reduce the noise from the neighbor's party.
Is it noisy when the neighbors have a party?
How the application works
By combining various building elements in the form of frames, studs, different types of panels and insulation, a graphical cross-section of the wall or floor one intends to build is created. The user chooses which building elements to use in their construction. The elements and their properties are retrieved from a central database that contains a large number of standard products common in the construction industry. If one wants to change some of the properties of the components, that is perfectly possible. The user therefore has full flexibility to build any constructions one can think of as long as they concern walls or floors.
The construction the user assembles is represented in the application as a data model. As soon as a change is made via the interface, it is reflected in the data model. Each change to the data model is automatically sent to a server that provides an advanced algorithm for acoustic calculations in structures. The algorithm analyzes the construction's composition, calculates its acoustic properties and sends the result back to the application. All of this happens more or less in real time. The result is displayed directly in the interface both as hard numbers and as an attractive graph.
The technology
The application is entirely web-based and built as an SPA (Single Page Application) in Vue/TypeScript. It communicates with a backend implemented in .NET Core which includes both the algorithm for acoustic calculations and an administration system that manages all the data needed around the application in the form of user accounts, storage of constructions, data for building elements, etc.
The administration system is built in Umbraco which provides a very user-friendly and flexible interface for the administrators and also saves a lot of development time since we avoid coding a lot of basic functionality and can focus directly on what is unique to this project.
Klas Hagberg, product owner at Sonusoft:
"This will be a fantastic product for acoustic modelling of walls and floor slabs that can be built upon and continuously improved as the industry evolves with new building components and product combinations. It is also a modern product that runs directly in the web browser, with a very attractive interface that encourages sound insulation calculations. Ease of use has been an important goal and here Limetta has truly met our expectations"
About Sonusoft
Sonusoft specializes in the design and development of innovative acoustic software solutions and databases for the construction industry. Their goal is to provide customers with acoustic applications that are easy to use and reliable, to support a future of sustainable buildings, with a focus on wood as a building material.
