Assignment

Lexia Provia - web app and digital learning resource

Educational publisher Sanoma Utbildning commissioned us to build their product "Lexia Provia" into a platform-independent e-learning tool as a web app. The product consisted of two software programs installed locally on users' computers, which was impractical and outdated. At the same time, a need was identified for a shared administration section to tie Lexia and Provia together into a cohesive product.

Challenge

A major challenge was the volume of content, namely 1,500 views. We chose to create an administrative interface based on horizontally scrollable columns that feel natural to navigate on both touch-screen tablets and with keyboard and mouse. Another important part of the assignment was to preserve the underlying pedagogy on which Lexia and Provia are based and that has been developed throughout the lifecycle of Lexia and Provia.

Customer requirements

  • Cloud-based
  • Responsive
  • Platform-independent
  • Administration section
  • Intuitive navigation and interface
  • Accessibility adaptation according to WCAG 2.0

Implementation

As a first step in the complex digitization project, Limetta conducted a comprehensive feasibility study. We interviewed the creators as well as key personnel at Sanoma Utbildning and the National Agency for Special Needs Education and Schools (SPSM) to gain a deeper understanding of the pedagogy and the challenges we faced
By building a prototype first, we could get hands-on with the product and, over time, develop an interface that is logical and intuitive for both keyboard and mouse as well as touchscreens. That way we managed to preserve the soul of the original product while bringing it to the web and the exciting possibilities it offers

Results

By bringing both Lexia and Provia together under the same administrative system, it makes things easier for teachers and lets them focus on pedagogy instead Examples of new possibilities - Receive recommended exercises based on the needs and areas for development identified for individual students. - Adapt exercises to the student's needs and language abilities. - Create profiles and groups to work with students in an organized way. - Distribute exercises directly to the student, who can then work on their own computer or tablet (instead of, as before, on the same computer as the teacher).

About Lexia Provia

Lexia Provia is a unique and advanced tool developed for students with dyslexia or language-based learning difficulties and has been available for more than 20 years and is used in over 60% of Swedish schools. Originally, Lexia and Provia were delivered as separate products on CD-ROMs that were installed on the user's computer. Provia was used to assess students' readiness for reading and writing instruction, and Lexia was used to provide exercises based on students' identified needs

The programs have been well received, but the interface was showing its age and the programs had some limitations in how and where they could be used. The creators Olle Gunnilstam and Martti Mårtens are behind the successful tool.
